History at St. Michael's
Intent
At St Michael’s we believe that the pupils should be taught to use their own experiences and the knowledge of the periods, events and people in the past to make connections and inform the impact on the world around them in an ever changing world. Enquiry and critical thinking skills ensure that the pupils are learning in a variety of contexts both in school and on external visits to reflect on their learning.
Implementation
In EYFS, the pupils explore the similarities and differences of people and events in the past and present making comparisons to their own experiences through role play, stories, non-fiction books and artefacts. They will learn about how they have changed over time and talk about their lives and family.
In KS1, the children continue to develop their awareness of the past, using common historical terms and phrases. They will learn about changes in the world using chronology on a timeline, significant people and events over time, the nation’s achievements and the history of the local area. They will be able to communicate whether events are within and beyond living memory.
Enquiry skills encourage children to ask questions and explore different forms of history representation including books, photos and artefacts.
In KS2, the learning continues to develop investigating the monarchy, empire and civilisations to build an overview of world history and the changes that have occurred. Also, in KS2, the ways that history is communicated and interpreted using the available evidence. Chronology includes teaching how the passing of time is represented differently including the use of dates but understanding that in different places similar events were happening and what legacy will be upheld.
