PSHE at St Michael’s
Intent
At St Michael’s, we aim to equip children with the knowledge, skills and attitudes they need to navigate life confidently and safely. Our PSHE curriculum supports pupils to make informed choices about their health, wellbeing, relationships, safety and finances, preparing them to become respectful, resilient and responsible members of society.
We follow the Kapow Primary RSE and PSHE scheme, which supports statutory Relationships and Health Education and wider personal development. Our curriculum promotes British values, equality, diversity and inclusion, while supporting our safeguarding responsibilities.
Our approach reflects our school vision, “Creating a community where we learn together through: respect, kindness, curiosity and faith,” encouraging children to respect themselves and others, make thoughtful decisions and contribute positively to their community.
Implementation
We follow the Kapow Primary scheme, which provides a progressive programme of learning from EYFS to Year 6. In Reception, learning focuses on self-regulation, building relationships and managing self. In Key Stage 1 and 2, teaching covers five key areas: families and relationships, health and wellbeing, safety and the changing body, citizenship, and economic wellbeing.
Key knowledge and skills are revisited and developed as children progress through the school. Lessons provide opportunities to explore real-life situations through discussion, stories, scenarios, videos and role-play, helping children practise decision-making and develop strategies for managing challenges.
At the beginning of each year, pupils establish ground rules to support a safe, respectful environment for discussion. Teaching is adapted to provide appropriate support and challenge, and inclusive resources help children understand different families, challenge stereotypes and appreciate diversity.
PSHE is linked meaningfully to other subjects, particularly Computing for online safety and Science for health, nutrition and human development. Consistent messages help children understand how and where to seek support when needed.
Impact
Our PSHE curriculum aims to develop confident, informed and respectful individuals who can apply their learning to everyday life. We want children to build positive relationships, make healthy and safe choices, manage challenges and understand their rights and responsibilities.
By the end of Year 6, pupils should be able to:
-
Develop positive relationships and treat others with respect and kindness.
-
Understand how to maintain their physical and emotional health and wellbeing.
-
Recognise risks, including online risks, and know how to seek help.
-
Make informed decisions and develop resilience when facing challenges.
-
Understand equality, diversity, British values and their role as responsible citizens.
-
Develop an age-appropriate understanding of money, financial choices and economic wellbeing.
The impact of our curriculum is monitored through ongoing assessment, pupil and teacher voice, observations, learning walks and book looks. Summative judgements are recorded on OTrack at the end of the summer term.
Ultimately, we want children to leave St Michael’s equipped with the knowledge, confidence and values to keep themselves safe, build healthy relationships and make positive contributions to society.
