At St Michael's, we believe that learning together through respect, kindness, curiosity and faith means not only caring for ourselves, but also standing up for others.
Inspired by the story of Nehemiah, we teach our children that courageous advocacy is about recognising when something is not right and having the courage, compassion and determination to make a difference. Just as Nehemiah saw the need to rebuild Jerusalem and took action to help his community flourish, we encourage our pupils to be agents of positive change in the world around them.
Courageous advocacy is central to our vision because it enables pupils to:
- develop a strong sense of justice and fairness
- understand that their voice matters and can bring about change
- grow in empathy, respect and kindness
- live out their faith through meaningful action
Pupil leadership plays an important role in this. Our School Council actively leads on projects that make a difference, including fundraising this year for Thames Hospice as part of the ‘Trunks Across the Thames’ initiative. Other children have become inspired by this; some pupils have organised their own fundraising events outside of school. Through this, pupils learn about compassion, service and the impact they can have when they work together for a shared cause.
We also strengthen pupils’ understanding of the wider world through links with local businesses and organisations. Our school choir have visited Ascot Day Centre to sing Christmas songs to them. Events such as our Future Jobs Day help children to think about their future, raise aspirations, and understand how they can contribute positively to society. We invited many of our local businesses and families in for this day to share information about their careers with our children.Â
Our curriculum further supports courageous advocacy, particularly through PSHE, RE and Geography, where pupils explore issues such as fairness, sustainability, and global responsibility. These opportunities encourage children to ask questions, think critically, and take informed action.
Our vision, rooted in Jeremiah 29:11, reminds us that everyone is valued and has a hopeful future. Through courageous advocacy, our pupils learn that they can help build that future - not just for themselves, but for others - ensuring all can flourish within our school, our community, and the wider world.
