PE at St Michael’s
Intent
At St Michael’s, we believe that high-quality Physical Education is essential for children’s physical health, emotional wellbeing and personal development. We aim to inspire all pupils to enjoy physical activity, develop their sporting skills and build the confidence to participate in a wide range of sports.
Through PE, children learn the importance of teamwork, resilience, fairness and healthy competition. We encourage pupils to challenge themselves, co-operate with others and develop the skills needed to lead healthy, active lives. Our curriculum reflects our school vision, “Creating a community where we learn together through: respect, kindness, curiosity and faith,” with respect, kindness and inclusion underpinning our approach to sport and physical activity.
Implementation
PE is taught by a subject specialist, with pupils participating in two high-quality lessons each week. Our curriculum follows the National Curriculum and provides a clear progression of skills through a range of activities, including invasion games, net and wall games, striking and fielding, gymnastics, dance, swimming, and outdoor and adventurous activities.
Lessons develop fundamental movement skills, sporting techniques, teamwork, problem-solving and tactical understanding. Children are encouraged to challenge themselves, support others and demonstrate fairness and respect.
Swimming opportunities are provided throughout Key Stage 2, with classes rotating during the year to enable pupils to develop their water safety and swimming skills.
Our provision is enriched through daily after-school sports clubs, local competitive events and opportunities to represent the school. Year 6 act as role models, supporting younger pupils with lunchtime activities, Sports Day and other sporting events. These opportunities develop leadership, teamwork and a sense of belonging.
Impact
Our PE curriculum aims to develop physically confident, resilient and active children who understand the importance of health and fitness. We want pupils to enjoy sport, recognise their achievements and feel confident participating in physical activity both in and beyond school.
By the end of Year 6, pupils should be able to:
-
Develop and apply a range of fundamental movement and sporting skills.
-
Participate confidently in different physical activities and sports.
-
Apply tactics, solve problems and make decisions during games and activities.
-
Demonstrate teamwork, leadership, resilience, fairness and respect.
-
Understand the importance of physical activity and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
-
Develop swimming and water safety skills in line with National Curriculum expectations.
The impact of our PE curriculum is monitored through ongoing assessment, observations of pupils’ skills and participation, pupil and teacher voice, and summative judgements recorded on OTrack at the end of the summer term.
Ultimately, we want children to leave St Michael’s with the skills, confidence and motivation to lead healthy, active lives and to recognise the enjoyment and benefits that physical activity can bring.
