Year 5

Welcome back! I am very excited to be teaching you this year. We have lots of interesting topics to learn, brilliant books to read and plenty of fun to have. We are very lucky this year to be supported Monday-Wednesday by Mrs Smith and on Monday, Thursday and Friday by Miss Ashleigh.

PE is on Wednesday and Friday - please wear PE kit to school on these days.

Homework will be set on a Thursday and will be returned to school the following Wednesday. Spellings will be tested on a Wednesday. Homework consists of:

  • Daily reading (to an adult if necessary) and recorded in your reading record
  • Spellings
  • One weekly SPaG or reading comprehension on Seesaw
  • One weekly task on MyMaths
  • Brain Builder - one per half term (schedule for these is below)

Learning to read is about listening and understanding as well as working out what’s printed on the page. Through hearing stories, children are exposed to a wide range of words. This helps them build their own vocabulary and improve their understanding when they listen, which is vital as they start to read. It’s important for them to understand how stories work too. Even if your child doesn’t understand every word, they’ll hear new sounds, words and phrases which they can then try out, copying what they have heard.  Audio books and podcasts are also a great way to vary reading materials.  A range of non-fiction and fiction will increase word knowledge and improve general knowledge.

Thank you
